THE POLICE in Kumasi have apprehended two persons who were allegedly in possession of a big bag, fully laden with fake currency, valued about GH¢500,000.

The two are Lari Salifu, 38, a resident of Goaso and Mahama Karim, 38, who resides at Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region.

They had just finished unloading the colossal amount of money in a hotel room and were perhaps, going for another consignment, when the police popped up.

Salifu, who was in possession of the bag, took to his heels upon sighting the police but he was arrested after a hot chase.

The police later apprehended Mahama, who was lurking at the scene and three other people, including the receptionist of the hotel.

Salifu and Mahama are currently in the custody of the police, whist the other three suspects, including the receptionist, have been granted police inquiry bail.

Briefing DAILY GUIDE, ACP Ampofo Duku, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said the police arrested the suspects on Tuesday at about 2:30 pm.

According to him, the police had information that two men had checked in at the hotel (name withheld), with big bags, containing some unknown items.

The police suspected that the bags were containing narcotic drugs and so they quickly rushed to the hotel to arrest the men and verify the contents in the bag.

He revealed that when the police reached the hotel, Salifu had finished unloading the money in room 304 and was about moving out.

'Salifu, surprisingly, took to his heels immediately he spotted the policemen at the hotel's reception area and the police gave him a wild chase,' according to ACP Ampofo Duku.

After few minutes later, the policemen overpowered him and brought him to the hotel room where the fake currency was spotted.

The police also found another bag in the room which was loaded with strange voodoo items, also known as 'juju' in the local parlance.

ACP Duku said Mahama, who booked the hotel room, was lurking around and the police arrested him together with the three other suspects.

Police indicated that Salifu and Mahama had the intention of posing as 'juju' men to dupe some miners from Bole.
