Headmistress complains about protocol admission of students

Winneba (C/R) Nov. 25, GNA - Madam Cecilia Kwakye Cofie, Headmistress of Winneba Secondary School, says the protocol admission coupled with uncompleted infrastructure is undermining the purpose of the Computer School Selection Placement System (CSSPS).

She therefore called for urgent measures to address the anomaly.

'When the CSSPS was introduced there was nothing like protocol admission and it sad that this time round parents continue to harass headmasters of senior high schools (SHSs) for protocol admission after the CSSPS placement,' she said.

She said parents whose wards were not placed in schools of their choice should go back to CSSPS Secretariat for redress.

Madam Cofie, who is also the President of Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools, stated this at the 66th speech and prize-given Day of the Winneba Secondary School.

The day on the theme: 'Quality Education for National Development: the role of stakeholders,' was grace by personalities including, board members and old boy association of the school.

Madam Cofie expressed the need for parents to instill equity and respect for high educational standard in their wards, for them to pass such values to the next generation, as such disciplines are building blocks for nation building and wealth creation.

'This year we had to contend with too many people fighting for limited number of spaces due protocol admission which should not be the case,' she said.

Madam Cofie said it was her hope that next year, all outstanding structures in schools would be completed to ease the pressure.

'It is also the prayer of many well-meaning citizens that the new SHS classrooms would be sited within the reach of the students in the community to enable them benefit from the free education.'

The Headmistress said the school has been up-graded to a category 'A' school, a feat which could be attributed to several factors that have been put in place, including her predecessor's efforts, committed board of governors, management, staff, parent-teacher-association, educational authorities, hardworking students representative council, past students and the community.

She said, academic performance of school for the past year has been very tremendous and encouraging and was adjudged the second best school in Central Region.

Madam Cofie said parents should note that most of the items and levies on the student bill do not remain in the school but are paid back into national chest and on goods and services.

She mentioned rising cost of utility bills, ban on recruitment that has taking heavy toll on the school kitchen and security service, renovation of boys dormitories, construction of a 2,000-capacity assembly hall to ease congestion as some of the major challenges the school is facing.
