Danger Looms As Vet Practitioners Threaten Strike

Veterinary practitioners in the Upper East Region have threatened to totally withdraw their services from December 7, 2015 if the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) continue to ignore their demands for their fair share of the benefits under the Interim Market Premium of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).

President of the group, Bayno Robert, at a press conference said they have been patient enough and have decided to let the public hear their problems with the FWSC before taking any decision that will affect the health of the public.

He said if the red band signal does not yield the required response from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission or government, then, the group will move to the second plan.

Under the second plan, all veterinary para-professionals beginning from November 30, 2015 will work to rule, that is, to work as required from 8:00am to 5:00pm and will no longer render service on weekends and holidays as they are currently doing at the various harbours, airports, abattoirs, international entry points across the country.

'If all these warnings are disregarded, then we will move to the last resort to withdraw all our service from December 7, 2015. We will not inspect animals entering the country, we will not risk our lives taking samples from suspected anthrax cases for testing in the lab, we will withdraw our services from the abattoirs so that there will be no inspection of animals before slaughtering at the abattoirs,' Bayno Robert mentioned.

He continued…'We foresee danger at this point and that is why we are sending out this warning before December 7.

According to them, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission is unduly making matters difficult and the government will have to intervene before it is too late.

If the group withdraws its services, even infected animals could be slaughtered at the abattoirs and that will result in the spread of diseases across the region.
