National Executives of the governing NDC have rebuffed criticisms about President Mahama’s failure to receive a 100% endorsement from party supporters in last Saturday's presidential primary.

The president received 95.2 percent of the votes endorsing his candidature.

“It is by all standards a very massive endorsement of our leader. This has not been achieved by any political party in Ghana apart from the NDC” General Secretary Asiedu Nketia told journalists in Accra on Tuesday.

Despite the massive endorsement, some social media quarters have been ridiculing President Mahama after 61,836 voted ‘No’ representing 4.8 percent of total votes cast.

NPP MP Ursula Owusu has described the President’s showing as embarrassing.

The MP noted the fact that the highest number of ‘No’ votes came from the party’s strong hold - Northern Region, followed by the Volta, Region – 7,811; Central – 7,548; Upper West – 6,504 and Upper East 6,085.

In her view, the NDC could have prevented this disgraceful act by simply acclaiming the President.

But at a press conference Tuesday, General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia insisted the 4.8% of its supporters who voted ‘NO’ against President Mahama, is in itself a massive endorsement of the party’s leader.

He said despite the endorsement some media houses were over-emphasizing the NO votes as important signals that the President is not popular.

“They are struggling to make 4.8% NO votes look bigger than 95%”
