National Executive Committee Of Nugs Affirms Its Decision Asking Mr Paa-quecy Adu To Step Aside As Nugs President

22.11.2015 LISTEN
By Orchill Prince David

By this statement, NEC wishes to bring a closure to this important issue trending on social media and student platforms accross the country. Indeed it was a difficult resolve by NEC members to request the President of NUGS Mr. Michael Paa-Quecy Adu to step aside as NUGS President to pursue the plethora of cases against him, and allow space for the Union to defend itself in court.

It is important to note that at an earlier meeting held which witnessed the attendance of all NEC members, a motion passed to let the Secretary chair the session of the meeting which bordered on the court issues against Mr Adu on one hand and the Union on the other hand, seeing that it amounted to conflict of interest that Mr Adu who was earlier chairing the meeting should chair this session in which he is a principal actor.

It was on this cardinal principle that NEC members moved to make the Secretary chair that session on the court issues. A conclusion was however not reached, so that meeting was adjourned on the back of an understanding that the Secretary would convene the next NEC Meeting to conclude the matter and chart a path for the way forward. It therefore comes at a surprise that Mr Adu is putting twists and spins on this matter. Acting as if no such decision was reached. Why he would do this smacks treachery and unfaithfulness to the truth.

While it is easy to find comfort in lies to save a situation, the timeless creed that "Truth Stands" will always prevail.

It will be recalled that there was a court injunction seeking to prevent the presidential handing over, but this was overlooked by both the outgone president, Mr. Prosper Dzitse and Mr. Paa-Quecy Adu, who both were in the know hence commiting a contempt of court.

Furtherance to that the case has been at court and Mr. Paa-Quecy has still not entered his defence, neither has the Union and being the principal person to represent the Union, this only amounts to conflict of interest. He (Paa-Quecy) has sought to hold NUGS to ransom, and we can't sit and watch idle while the tenets of the Constitution are under siege. As we speak, the court keeps putting charges on NUGS (for non-appearance). Why should the Union incur such a needless cost because one man? If this is not a clear case conflict of interest and causing financial loss to the Union, then we don't know what else should constitute harm to the Union.

We therefore in the spirit of brotherliness asked him to step aside so that someone else may represent the Union whiles he represents himself and as and when the case is completed, he can come back to occupy his office duly. However this seem to be misunderstood by some few students who are casting innuendos about our action; and the subsequent actions of Mr. Adu himself is not helping the amicable solution of the matter. We would have wished this issue remained internal until he resumes his office after the court case shoukd he be cleared. However, since a lot of good students are seeking answers, we decided to officially clear the air.

By this statement also, we wish to make it clear in very unambiguous language, that the Union will remain unfazed and will chart an unchallenged way forward.

This Union will not be balkanized, it will not bow to ferocity and aggression. We are a people of law and order and such will be the status quo. There is always a remedy provided in law which is the civil way to handling issues.

Also we wish to state that as per the provisions of the NUGS constitution, the general secretary takes over as acting NUGS President until all these issues are resolved. We wil therefore implore all students and student leaders to give him and the other officers of the Union the needed support to serve the good students of Ghana.

Thank you.

Signed,

Ferdinand Boakye Boateng

(Acting NUGS President)
