Rejoinder: Ghana Union General Assembly Meeting

13.11.2015 LISTEN
By Desmond Frimpong

Dear all!

On 9th November 2015, an email was sent by Mr Richard Asante inviting members of the Ghanaian community to attend a General Assembly meeting on 28th November 2015.

The leadership of Ghana Union Norway wish to state unequivocally that Mr Richard Asante, a former President of the Union, has no mandate whatsoever to convene a meeting in the name of the Union. We therefore call on all and sundry to ignore any such invitation as due process was not followed prior to the announcement.

If Mr Asante believes there is a compelling need for the community to meet, he should alert the executive members of the Union so that a meeting will be called for that purpose by the board.

In his email, Mr Asante raised concern about the need to "resolve problems surrounding the last election and the handing over". As far as the leadership of Ghana Union is concerned, the election in April this year took place with the expressed consent of then President Asante.

He fully participated in that election and raised no misgiving about the way the election was conducted. Mr Asante heartily pledged to honour the results and co-operate on a smooth transition of power from the old board to a new one. It comes therefore as a surprise to us that Mr Asante is now talking about "problems surrounding the last elections".

Nevertheless, the leadership of the Union is interested to listen to whatever grievances Mr Asante may harbour so that together we find a lasting solution to these problems and also to get done with the financial report of his stewardship and the hand-over process.

By working closely with the leadership of the Union, Mr Asante may choose a date and venue of his choice for the community to meet and bring closure to these issues. We hope to hear from our former President within 5 days.

Yours sincerely

Desmond Frimpong, President, Ghana Union Norway
