Police Block Attempts By Two Families To Settle Defilement Case Out Of Court

A 27-year-old carpenter, Eric Quashie, is in the grips of the police for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl at Anyaa, a suburb of Accra in the GA-South Municipality.

Quashie was busted after failing to take care of the victim and her baby.

The 27 -year -old had a sexual relationship with the 14 year- girl for almost a year; the girl got pregnant and delivered a baby girl on the 7th June, 2015.

Despite both families reaching a consensus to have the man take care of the baby and help the 14- year -old further her education, Eric Quashie failed to honour his part of the agreement.

Coupled with hardship and her inability to continually take care of the baby, the 14 –year- old on Friday 30th October, 2015 walked into the Anyaa Police Station to report the man and pleaded with officers to “let the man sign a bond of good behavior”.

However, the girl did not realize that her sexual encounter with the man constituted defilement, which is a criminal offense punishable by summary conviction to imprisonment for a term of not less than seven years and not more than twenty-five years.

Speaking in an interview with Atinka FM’s Regina Asamoah, Inspector Abena Amponsah, who is in charge of the case, explained that the police are handling the case as a defilement case and not a domestic issue.

According to her, the police will still pursue the case despite the girl’s wish to get the man sign a bond of good behavior and set free to take care of the baby.

She however made a passionate appeal to all well-meaning citizens to come to the aid of the 14-year-old in taking care of the girl and her six-month-old baby.
