District Assembly urged to explore avenues for creating employment

Breman Asikuma (C/R), Oct. 13, GNA - Ms. Queenstar Pokua Sawyerr, Deputy Central Regional Minister has call on assembly members to explore avenues for the creation of employment for their people.

She said the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development was pursuing policies on the establishment of Small and Medium-Term Enterprises and Local Economic Development across the assemblies with a view of creating employment for the youth.

Madam Sawyerr made the call at the inauguration of new Assembly Members for Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa (AOB) District at Breman Asikuma.

The Assembly members, made of 32 elected and 12 government appointees were sworn into office by Mr. C. K. Asomah the AOB District Magistrate.

The Deputy Central Regional Minister who is also the Member of Parliament for Agona East said one sure area where there was comparative advantage was in the agriculture sector, which is the source of food and raw materials for industry and export.

She urged the Assembly members to work towards a diversified and commercially oriented agricultural sector with strong linkage for processing, industry and market oriented sectors.

By so doing, they would be generating employment for the youth in the area, the country as a whole and addressing the issue of reducing rural poverty, she said.

Ms Sawyerr advised the Assemby members to put aside their partisan politics and let the development of the area be their top most priority for it is only when they collaborate that they could help develop the area.

Mr. Adom Botchway, the AOB District Chief Executive, congratulated the Assembly Members for their successful election and appointment and expressed the hope that they will live up to expectation so that their call will benefit the entire people of the District.

Later in an election conducted by the District Electoral Commission led by Joseph Appiahgyei the District EC Officer; Mr. Ishaque K. Anakwa was elected the Presiding Member for the Assembly and was also sworn into office by the District Magistrate Mr. C. K. Asomah.
