Agona Swedru, Oct.13, GNA - Members of the Agona West Municipal Assembly on Tuesday retained Mr Haruna Nuhu Sanni, former Presiding Member (PM) as the current PM for a second term in office.

Mr Sanni who was elected unopposed for the Yarewa Zongo Electoral Area, polled 32 votes to defeat Mr Munkaila Wahab, the newly-elected assemblyman for the Agona Swedru Old Zongo Electoral Area who obtained 13 votes.

The election was supervised by Mr Annobil Forson, Agona West Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission (EC).

The re-election of Mr Sanni received stiff opposition from irate youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of the Agona West Constituency.

The angry youth claimed that Mr Sanni failed to perform during his first term in office as PM, and there was, therefore, no need to give him another nod.

But members of the assembly objected to their wishes.

Mr Justice Peter Dei Ofei, Agona Swedru High Court Judge, sworn into office the new members of the assembly and the PM.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Ransford Ninsin, Central Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, read the President's inauguration address.

The Assembly consists of 31 elected and 13 government appointees.

In a welcoming address, Mr Samuel Oppong, Agona West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), urged the newly-elected members to put aside their political affiliations and foster unity for development..

He disclosed that nine of the 31 old members retained their seats, and commended them for their hard work and dedication.

Mr Oppong expressed the hope that the new members would learn from the experience of the old ones.

Mr Oppong used the occasion to distribute 380 dust bins procured by the Assembly to the new members, chiefs, security agencies, individuals and other civil groups, to improve sanitation within the Municipality,

The MCE commended the Assembly members for retaining Mr Sanni, and gave the assurance that the Agona West Assembly would see the real 'Better Ghana Agenda' programme in the years ahead.

Mr Sanni thanked members for the confidence reposed in him, and pledged to work hard to help move the assembly's development agenda forward.
