OccupyGhana Shows Appreciation To Speakers, Media Houses And Ghanaians

OccupyGhana® would like to express its gratitude to Ghanaians for their support during the past year’s journey and also congratulate Ghanaians on their new born show of public interest participation in governance issues.

OccupyGhana® had a successful anniversary forum and would like to express gratitude to the following individuals who were our speakers for helping to make the programme a success:

Samson Anyenini, who expertly moderated the forum with all smoothness and panache;

George Amankwah (National Best Farmer 2014) for sharing his insight into the plight of the farming community and his valuable suggestions to government to consider to ensure that farming becomes a very lucrative activity;

Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, for emphasizing the need for freedom of speech and press freedom and rehashing our “No Soli” stance;

Anis Haffer, for proving to us that our current public education system does not actually promote open-mindedness in us and our children and introducing a new dimension;

Peter Mac Manu, for insights into the problems we have on our Electoral Register and pointing out flaws within our Electoral system;

Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, on emphasizing on the need for us to change the laws which allows the Executive to appoint DCEs but rather us the electorate should be voting them in and making them accountable to us, the people;

Egbert Faibille Jr., on showing us the need for us to separate the Attorney-General’s office form the Ministry of Justice to ensure proper accountability of top ranking officials and other public officers who are perceived to be corrupt;

And Ace Ankomah, for sharing with Ghanaians what OccupyGhana has been doing for the past year since its establishment.

OccupyGhana® would also like to express our profound gratitude to all media houses who have been with us throughout the journey and those who covered our forum, especially our media partners Daily Guide Newspaper, Joy 99.7 FM and Citi 97.3 FM.

OccupyGhana® also wishes to thank the management and staff of the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel, who gave us an excellent ambience and media support to carry out this function

Lastly, OccupyGhana® would like to thank all Ghanaians who showed up and tuned in live to listen to what we had to share with them and for their continuous and unflinching support.

Within OccupyGhana® held a number of fora on electoral and education reforms and issued communiques highlighting the key conclusions arrived at. These have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for their consideration.

OccupyGhana® also held three separate engagements on combating corruption, in Accra and Takoradi. These anti-corruption awareness raising and public education events have since led to the following results:

1. Engagement with the Audit Service.
The Group persuaded the Auditor-General that its constitutional obligation with respect to disallowance and surcharge of public officers deemed to have misappropriated funds had neither been discharged and nor effectively implemented. The Auditor Service has subsequently proposed a Joint Working Committee be set up between itself and OccupyGhana® Lawyers in order to draw out a frame work for this exercise.

2. OccupyGhana® initiated court action against a former Minister of Environment and Science, Dr. Joe Oteng-Adjei with respect to his retention of a state vehicle after his ministerial position had ended.

3. OccupyGhana® has also initiated a process requesting more information and clarification regarding the GYEEDA payments and the beneficiary companies under the payments. OccupyGhana® wrote a letter to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to provide further and better particulars. OccupyGhana® is yet to receive a response. The Group is currently planning its next line of action.

4. OccupyGhana® has also filed for observer status from the Electoral Commission for the 2016 general elections and hopefully we should get a positive response.

OccupyGhana® would like to encourage Ghanaians to be unflinching in their demand for good governance as their birth right for being Ghanaians and put the country first and foremost in all their demands from leadership, devoid of partisan affiliations. We must show real love to the country that God gave us, for it is the only one we have and strive to get it to be the Ghana we all want for ourselves, our children and generations unborn.
