By Prince Akpah
Press Release International Day Of The Girl Child - the Cry Of A Girl-who Will Hear And Be A Doer
OCT 11, 2015 LISTEN

"I am stopped from being me;so I lived in the lives and dreams of others; I cannot or am not allowed to be who I want to be identified as or who I want to be with or wherein I want to live in and most of all where I want to go to live my dreams. Could it be nature or its nature or the two combined? Whichever way it is, I believe it’s unfair. Unfair because right from birth I was called "it","inhuman","useless","aboa" among others in different native tongues just by my mere biological disposition of which I was not their expectation. I still do hear the echoes of some voices that tried to change their minds to accept me for who I am but no matter how hard they tried nothing good yielded out of it. I crave for the indulgence of my readers to bear with me to have the audacity to expose my convictions, ideas and perceptions about the cause; they simply lost touch with nature or reality, forgetting that I did not bring myself here. Allow me to whisper into your ears a secret "I pity and blame myself sometimes for not protesting but rather looking on while I slowly both consciously and unconsciously, I became what they actually expected of me". Hmm, I hope no one heard it?

Over a zillion times I keep asking why? Why!? Why!? Why me!? Am I not just like you!,. Is it water that flows through my veins!?,Do I not have hands that work equally as you do and perhaps even more than you, provided you are objective enough!?,Oh gosh! Do my brainy-brains not work and think to make good decisions!?Or you think I do not have "it"!?..oh yes I mean the "it". Viola! I have all, as proven by science and indeed I have the "it”. The "it" which gives you much honour and ego. The "it" which society presume as your strength when you lie to test if indeed it does function. The difference is that my "it" is a "V" which undoubtedly also deserves and should command of you to show the same humane treatment to me irrespective of my biological disposition; A GIRL.

I am a girl and I am proud of my sex and I shall continue to learn to improve upon myself. I shall rise and break the shackles and liberate myself together with other girls for sisterhood is powerful. It is no fault of me that I am born a GIRL.STOP ABUSING MY RIGHTS FOR I AM JUST AS HUMAN AS YOU ARE and I know for a fact that you are aware of what I go through and will not want to trade places with me not even if BILL GATE will his assets to you without any terms applying. You will not want to be in the kitchen while your friends are learning or be asked to stop school so that your brother can further his education for lack of money or will you want to be harassed and abused of which when you even report it will fall on deaf ears just because you are a girl. I know for a fact as well that, you will not want to be married off or betrothed to someone you do not know much about or will you want to be asked to absent yourself among gatherings where decisions are being made even if those decisions will affect you, just because you are a girl.

Oh! why ask me to stop when am not even done listing my "enviable and daily kind receptive treatment" from you my opposite sex. Sorry, I wish I could stop even at the first two lines but I just want you to empathize with me. Unfortunately, that is what me and my fellow girls go through in every second, minute, hour, day, month and year in our homes, communities and across the globe for no other reason but for our mere disposition of being a GIRL.

I cry each day and i am crying out loud even much louder today, a day which is my day but many still find it irrelevant or worth celebrating; “INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD", so that you hear me and join me in my quest or course to be liberated and feel human in a world which I even have the highest population ratio in sex distribution. I am also crying so that you allow me be a girl and not a woman and a woman and not a child for when the time is due I will choose my own partner to marry."

I am EVA ABUGABE and as we mark and celebrate INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD, I add my cry to the cry of the girl near you and I.I stand up for the GIRL CHILD and together with others who advocate for the rights of the girl child, I say "NO TO ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST GIRLS IN OUR HOMES, COMMUNITIES AND THE WORLD".

We must as a people, as a society and as a continent realize that girls are the agents of change through whom we can reach humanity to make a change and leave not just a legacy but legacies. They are the doors and windows of our brighter tomorrow. Girls have extraordinary potentials which must be developed through girl child empowerment. Thus, the should be allowed to have and enjoy their rights; rights to determine their own destiny so that they can grow and develop themselves and contribute to a stronger and more stable world.

She is telling you together with many other girls today and like any other day which comes after today that ,

"I am a GIRL and I have RIGHTS"
"I am your GIRL and your girl has RIGHTS"

"We are your GIRLS and we have RIGHTS"
Eva is a vibrant dedicated young woman who advocates for women and children
