Apam, Oct 9, GNA - Madam Sherry Ayittey, the Minister of Fisheries and Acquaculture, has urged District Assemblies to let job creation be their major priority through agriculture and the conservation of land.

She said, they should not give all the land for housing projects, but make sure that there was land for the cultivation of maize, palm oil coconuts, and cassava, to feed the people.

Let us also support the young people who want to go into agriculture with seedlings, tractors and money, she said.

Madam Ayittey made the call in a speech read on behalf of the President at the Inauguration of the Gomoa West District Assembly at Apam.

She asked the Assembly to find out what it could export to earn more foreign exchange for the district.

This, she said, would go a long way to reduce poverty among people in the district.

The Minister said the district needed good leaders who would take optimum decisions, and charged assembly members to be accountable and responsive to the needs of the people who elected them.

She called for co-operation with the law enforcement agencies to ensure peace and stability in the district.

Mr Acquaye who stood unopposed, polled 46 out of 52 votes to be elected as the Presiding Member Member.

Mr Eric Ansah Awuah, Apam magistrate court judge, swore Mr Acquaye into office.

The Minister appealed to the Assembly to check illegal electricity connections in their areas.

She charged assembly members to explain government policies and programmes to the people at the grassroots to enhance the decentralization programme.
