The HuD Group Marks International Day Of The Girl Child

Adolescence comes with challenges for both boys and girls; but the challenges can be more daunting for girls. It is also the formative years where young ones dare to dream even the impossible and live in the bliss of a brighter future. But most girls in our communities do not have the luxury to dream. As they battle with physical and hormonal challenges they also battle with social, cultural and economic challenges that inhibit their ability to even dream of a good future.

Over the past years, targeted investments have been made in girls and these have yielded great dividends. Girls’ enrolment in primary education has increased tremendously; some harmful cultural practices that affect girls are being tackled at various levels by the international communities, local governments, NGOs etc.

These notwithstanding, girls in our target communities continue to face peculiar challenges including access to quality secondary and higher education, child marriage, lack of information and services related to puberty and reproductive health, unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, gender-based violence, among others. A number of them are forced to leave school early because they get pregnant mostly through rape and defilement. Girls will have to juggle between school and supporting their parents to generate income for their families’ survival. Though their potentials are limitless, their aspirations are slowed or truncated and it takes an almost nonexistent audacity to get on track.

We in The HuD Group believe in the power of the adolescent girl. We believe that targeted investments in the development of girls are a sure way to end trans-generational poverty. This year, we are particularly excited about the theme of the International Day of the Girl Child, “The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030.” We are excited because our work with girls over the years has proved that they are a sure asset to totally inspire society.

The empowered girl grows into a woman who births stronger and healthy children and builds healthy families and businesses. The empowered girl births and grows promising micro enterprises, becomes that caring doctor who will go all lengths to save a life, that teacher who transmits knowledge with passion, the carpenter who innovates beautiful and useful furniture for domestic and corporate use. We believe in the power of the adolescent girl!

To commemorate and celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child, we are engaging the public through the media to discuss policies and practices that affect the girl child. We are gathering amazing girls in Ashaiman for our annual Girls Aspire event. This will be an amazing encounter as we expose girls to various young women for mentoring and empower them to build their confidence and interact with their peers.

This year, in partnership with EPP books and Literamed, we are presenting some of our participants with what we call the book bouquet, which is a collection of books, as we instill the culture of reading in our girls.

We call on all individuals and corporate institutions to take great interest in the development of the girl child for a better society.
