TMA swears in 46 Assembly Members

Tema, Oct 7, GNA - Forty six assembly members of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) were Tuesday, sworn into office for its seventh Assembly.

The members are made up of 32 elected members and 14 government appointees.

Justice Adjei Frimpong, Supervising Judge of Tema led them to swear the oath of allegiance, official oath and of secrecy.

Professor Joshua Alabi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, reading the inaugural speech on behalf of President John Mahama, congratulated members on their election and appointment to the Assembly.

Prof Alabi called on members to live up to the responsibility reposed in them to help develop their respective electoral areas.

He indicated that even though government would continue to play a major role towards the development of the Assembly, they must put in measures to generate more revenue to develop the metropolis.

He bemoaned the indiscriminate putting up of structures on water ways and cautioned the Lands Commission, Town and Country Planning, Survey Department and other stakeholders to abide by the laws to ensure discipline in the metropolis.

Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, reminded members of the crucial role they played in democracy.

Mr Odamtten urged them to discharge their roles as stipulated in the Local Governance Act 462, section 16 (1).

He called for selfless and dedicated service from them to project the image of the Assembly.

Dr Deborah Kugbadzi, Director of Tema Polyclinic and a former presiding member of the TMA, who chaired the inauguration, asked the members to continue to maintain the dignity of Tema in all their endeavours.

Meanwhile, the members of the Assembly failed to elect a presiding member as none of the three contestants obtained the two-thirds majority votes needed.

The contestants Mr Richard Fiadomor, Mr Romeo Akahoho, and Mr Joseph Korto, obtained 23, 14, and nine respectively.

Mr WatsonTizor Apentsui, Tema Metropolitan Electoral Officer, said the election would be re-organised after 10 days in accordance with law.
