Where Are The Democracy Champions When It Is On Test In Syria?

Feature Article Where Are The Democracy Champions When It Is On Test In Syria?

The recent immigration challenges facing the European countries may be unfortunate, giving the intensity of the rush and the large number of migrants seeking political asylum. A crisis concerned entity, Mercycorps's report a month ago says that 4million refugees are distributed among the European countries, but as much as 16million still in Syria needs assistance.

Much as the immigration policies of any country are important to ensure her socio-economic security, this one calls for a more co passionate handling if democracy with its human rights can continue to hold its head up in pride.

The "Arab Spring" that has culminated in this situation after about three years struggle in Syria was all for the promotion and adoption of Democracy in the non-democratic Arab world. If it is accepted that democracy is the most popular of the governance systems now then their only mistake may be the speed at which the revolution was expected to happen. Unfortunately with the benefit of hindsight, the champions of democracy decided not to interfere in the process; so Syria was left to gradually self-destruct into the present mess. Her President has supervised the devastation all this while and is still proud of heading a half-ruined and self-destructing country, as if there has been no other option or person that could be considered to effect change!

So now the experiment has been attempted, the dead, wounded and the displaced recorded, and history is made. Those who yearned for democracy and could not get it have nowhere to lay their head and are roaming for asylum. If not helped quickly their suffering will become the conscience of the champions of democracy, i.e. European countries, the USA, Australia etc. if accepting them is a bit scary, maybe because of their Arabic with the terrorist background, then the proposal by a billionaire philanthropist to resettle them on a yet-to-be-purchased island, should be supported as a second best option. As the saying goes, a beggar has no choice; and obviously a Syrian refugee is not the one to dictate where they have to be settled even as their choice could be considered.

If these endowed and advanced countries do not act positively and quickly, then they should note that this is a global situation that is staring us all in the face. Just as a sneeze nowadays in one corner of the Global Village will make a person in another corner of it catch a cold. Whether it was foreseen or not, the dragged revolt in Syria that was observed as an Arab affair has produced among other things ISIS terrorism to add up to those already giving us headaches. We all know that when it comes to terrorism, even as no country is immune, it is the non-Arab nations like Europe, USA, etc that bear the brunt. Let us see if it is a a case of an ignored stitch that could have saved nine, but even as they did not act in time it is still better late than never.
