06.10.2015 LISTEN
By African Union Commission (AUC)

The 11th Ordinary Session of the African Union Commission on International Law (AUCIL) commenced today in Cairo, Egypt.

The primary objective of the AUCIL is the promotion of the progressive development of the international law in Africa and its codification.

In his opening remarks, the AUCIL Acting Chairperson, Prof. Daniel Makiesse Mwanawanzambi welcomed the participants, especially the four (4) new Members elected at the AU Summit in January 2015. He also thanked the Government of Egypt for offering to host the 11th Ordinary Session of AUCIL (5-16 October 2015), the 4th Edition of the AUCIL Forum (19-20 October 2015); and the first Retreat between the AUCIL and the Office of the Legal Counsel (21 October 2015).

Prof. Mwanawanzambi highlighted the fact that holding for the first time, an AUCIL session outside the AU Headquarters, will give more visibility to this fledging Organ its activities, as is already evidenced by the high number of participants that have confirmed their participation to the 4th Edition of the AUCIL Forum.

Apart from the swearing-in of the newly elected members and electing a substantive Chairperson for the remainder of the current Bureau's term, the 11th Ordinary Session of the AUCIL will consider among others a number of ongoing studies: study on the Continental Legal Framework on Migration; study on the review of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child; study on the Continental Legal Framework on Piracy; and study on the African Convention on Judicial Cooperation and Mutual Legal Assistance.
