Students of Akwamuman Senior High School in the Eastern Region say they live in constant fear after discovery cracks in the storey building that houses final year students.

Some of the students who spoke to Joy News on condition of anonymity said, school authorities are yet to respond to their complaints.

Built in 1972, the school has produced prominent Ghanaians, but the building in which the students sit and learn has not seen any refurbishment for decades.

Students have no choice than to make do in a dilapidated structure that they fear poses serious threat to their lives.

Headmaster of the school, Mr. Emmanuel K. Tawiah has downplayed the students' concerns about the cracks. He claimed that they are exaggerating the situation.

He told Joy News’ Latif Iddrisu the district engineer has passed it and that is the reason why the students are still in the structure.

He however conceded that the school has not seen any renovation for the past decades due to lack of funds.

But the students disagree with his position.
Some of them said it is tough for them to learn in such an environment. It does not give them the sound mind they needed to study, they complained. The result they said is the poor performance in their academic work.

Meanwhile, teachers there have confirmed that several reports to give the dilapidated building fixed have fallen on deaf ears.

Inside one of the classrooms, the ceiling made of wood has water marks, many of the panels broken off and there are rusty aluminum roofing sheets have holes in them.

The teachers admitted that the situation is definitely not a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
