Accra, Oct. 3, GNA - HelpAge Ghana, a non-governmental organisation promoting the prospects of older persons, has donated a number of items such as second-hand clothings, foot wear, brooms, toiletries, disinfectants and soap to patients at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

The donation, which was part of activities marking the international day for the aged, was meant for patients in the male and female geriatric wards.

The patients were also served with lunch by HelpAge Ghana, while members also undertook a 45 minutes clean-up exercise of the two wards.

Madam Ethel Boakye, the Administrator and Media Co-ordinator, HelpAge Ghana, said the donation was to enable members show their love and concern for the patients.

She said HelpAge Ghana has adopted the two wards to ensure continued support for the patients.

Receiving the items, Madam Emmanuela Awude, Deputy in-charge of the Female Geriatric Ward, expressed gratitude to HelpAge Ghana for the kind gesture.

In a related development, the Power Queens Club of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has presented a number of assorted cooked food items such as kenkey, rice and soft drinks to patients at the Acute Female Ward One of the Hospital.

Queen Ida Boahene, President of the Accra East Sub-Transmission Region, Power Queens Club of ECG, said the association has adopted the ward to enable them keep supporting the patients.

She said the donation was part of activities marking the Queens Annual Week Celebration.

She urged other organisations and philanthropists to help meet the needs of the patients of the Hospital.

Mr Emmanuel Pappoe, Deputy Director Nursing Service in-charge of Nursing Division, praised the Queens for the support.

He appealed to the government to resolve the salary issues of the striking Aggrieved Nurses of the Hospital in order to ensure smooth working atmosphere.

He said the situation hard brought untold hardship to both the patients and the few senior staff, who are being over stretched.

The Aggrieved Nurses on Thursday; October 1, embarked on an indefinite strike to put government under pressure to pay their salaries, which has been outstanding for between nine to 13 months.

Mr Christian Adisenu, the Spokesman of the Aggrieved Nurses, told the Ghana News Agency that the group which forms 80 per cent of the work force of the Hospital would not return to work until their salaries hit their accounts.

He said the government has already promised them that their salaries would be fully paid by the end of September; which compelled them to call off their week-long strike in August.
