The Brong-Ahafo Chapter of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has backed the national body, which has threatened to declare a strike if the grievances of members are not addressed by 13th October 2015.

Speaking to the media at its regional office in Sunyani, the Regional Chairman Anaba Jacob said they were not making any new demands on government but want it to fulfill its obligations to the teachers.

He said government had failed to pay the annual incremental credit of teachers, full salary arrears of newly-recruited teachers, as well as transfer and travel grants.

Mr Jacod said government had refused to meet the teachers to renegotiate their conditions of service, which expired on 31st December 2011, saying some teachers had worked for more than two years without pay.

He said the various issues were negatively affecting the morale of teachers in the classroom, hence their decision to support the national body to declare strike.

Mr Jacob said the conditions of service of teachers must be renegotiated because most of the rules had changed.

He criticized the National Labour Commission (NLC) for failing to bring government to order. For instance, a teacher should not teach less or more than 25 periods in a week in a class of 40 but now classes have more than 100 students affecting the quality of tuition due to inappropriate student, teacher ratio.
