General News Cook Nabbed For Stealing
OCT 3, 2015 LISTEN

A cook has been put before an Accra Circuit Court for stealing the household items of a nurse after she bought the house she (the cook) formerly occupied.

The suspect, Aku Barnor, was put in a court presided over by Yaw Atta Sampong and charged with stealing the household items worth GH¢35,000 but she pleaded not guilty.

She has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 with two sureties while the case has been adjourned to October 10, 2015.

Narrating events leading to the arrest of the cook, the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector A.A. Afrifa, told the court that the complainant is a nurse and a resident of Ashongman while the cook lives at Agbogba, adding that in 2013 the complainant bought a house from the cook's husband at Agbogba. He said the nurse was supposed to occupy the house in 2014 but the suspect was still occupying the said house with her children by then.

According to him, the nurse had the suspect ejected from the house and she reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) at Madina and was told to return to the house and occupy it, adding that by then a civil suit was pending at the High Court on same issue.

The police officer noted that police officers and a court bailiff were ordered to eject the cook from the house and they did but the cook, who was dissatisfied, returned and occupied the house.

The prosecutor noted that in 2014 the complainant went to court and complained that the suspect had stolen her household items which included a deep freezer, turkey fryer, home theatre, plastic cups and  a box of shoes among others, all amounting to GH¢35,000.

He further said on September 23, 2015 the complainant went and reported to the police that the suspect had returned some of the stolen items including her shoes and cooking utensils.

The prosecutor stated that the suspect was invited for questioning and she denied the offence and said when she was ejected from the house, her relatives went to the house and took her possessions.

She told police that she informed her relatives that the suspect had summoned her to Nogokpo shrine for stealing her items so they returned the items to the complainant.
