Govt Has Been Remiss In Its Duty Of Care Towards Female Athletes – CPP
01.10.2015 LISTEN

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) Women’s Wing would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Black Queens, our National Women’s Football Team, for winning the Gold Medal in the just ended All Africa Women’s Football Tournament. in Kinshasa, DRC.

The Black Queens have done us proud and we will remember their remarkable feat for years to come. They have shown resilience and focus, despite several challenges, both physical and financial, over the years, and won this wonderful achievement for themselves and Ghana.

We are however dismayed that our Black Queens' sterling achievement is being tarnished by the embarrassing and very public squabbling about their fees and accommodation.

We seek to highlight and express our disquiet over the relentless bias which seems to have taken root against women in sports in Ghana, particularly in the planning and provision of support services for them. Indeed, there are worrying indications that the Ministry of Sports and other government agencies have been remiss in their duty of care towards female athletes, the Black Queens included. We ask that these deep-seated discriminatory acts towards female athletes be addressed and stopped; and for support services to be given equally, to all who fly the flag of Ghana in sports, irrespective of gender, age or ability.

We appeal to the government and its agencies to uphold the rights of women and girls as enshrined in our constitution. This fantastic achievement by the Black Queens proves the importance in investing in females in our society, not least, to serve as visible role models to others in society.

Once again, we applaud our Black Queens for bringing glory to Ghana. Long may you reign as champions! Ayekoo!
