SEP 26, 2015 LISTEN

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to face yet another embarrassment on the international scene as Ghanaians living in the United States gear up to demonstrate against his regime during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.

They are said to be coming in their numbers on September 30, 2015 at the premises of the United Nations to inform the international community about how terribly bloated the Ghanaian voter register is.

The demonstration will also be used to show to the rest of the world the state of human rights abuses and lawlessness in Ghana.

A press statement released by Concerned Ghanaians-US stated, 'Moreover, we are going to show the world how lawless the corrupt John Mahama/NDC administration has rendered Ghana and her citizens.'

The statement, signed by the coordinator of the group, Amponsah Stonash claimed, 'We will be picketing in our numbers on September 30, 2015 at the premises of the UN to show to the international community how terribly bloated the Ghanaian voter register is with foreigners, and the repercussions that lie ahead of us as a nation if the call for a new register is not heeded.'

It indicated, 'We are going to make sure that our voices are heard even within the inner bowels of the General Assembly building; donor partners who financially support Ghana's elections, other dignitaries and presidents need to see the dangers that lurk around for Ghana in election 2016, if a new voter register is not used.'

Some well-meaning citizens of Ghana, particularly opposition political parties, religious leaders and civil society organizations, have been mounting a spirited pressure on the Electoral Commission (EC) for the compilation of a new electoral roll ahead of next year's crucial elections.

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has however, remained opposed to the demand, heightening suspicion that the party stands to have an electoral advantage, should the current bloated register – which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) alleges is embellished with the names of some 80,000 foreign nationals, particularly Togolese – remains unchanged.

Police Condemned
Meanwhile, Concerned Ghanaians-US has condemned the recent brute force meted out by Ghana's police to peaceful demonstrators in Accra.

Many of the peaceful protestors sustained various degrees of injury, with one person losing his eye.

The statement pointed out, 'In fact, we will be tendering in a human rights violation complaint to the Human Rights Committee on how the Ghana police under the command of the John Mahama administration, blatantly violated the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of discerning Ghanaians during the Let My Vote Count Alliance protest.'

Commendation
The group has commended the LMVCA demonstrators for risking their lives in order to press home for a new voter register, urging them not to succumb to any brutality from the security forces in their drive to compel the EC to compile a new register.

Meanwhile, Concerned Ghanaians-US has called on all concerned Ghanaians living in the US to join the demonstration against President Mahama and his entourage in New York.
