The West African Examination Council has withheld the results of 6,812 candidates who sat for this year’s BECE for alleged examination malpractices.

A statement from the examinations body says the results will be released “as soon as the council concludes its investigations”.

A total of 437,942 candidates registered for the examinations that was written in June this year.

During the examinations, students were made to re-write five of the papers following widespread leakage.

The cancelled papers include English Language 2, Religious and Moral Education 2, Science 2, Mathematics 2 and Social Studies 2.

Four teachers – Emmanuel Opoku, 29, Kwadwo Boateng 25, Kwadwo Danso, 34, and Boateng Collins, 29 – were arrested in the Ashanti Region for their alleged roles in the leakage.

However, the Council and its officials were blamed for the leak with several bodies, including the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), calling for the dissolution of the entire WAEC board.

As part of efforts to check the annual WAEC examination paper leakages, the Education Ministry directed security agencies to investigate circumstances surrounding the leakage of the BECE papers.

Deputy Minister of Education in charge of pre-tertiary education, Alex Kyeremeh, said the Ministry turned to the security agencies as pressure mounts on the education sector to get to the bottom of the leaks.

Students would have to pass the BECE to enter Senior High School.

Meanwhile, WAEC says it has hosted the remaining results of the 2015 BECE at its website.
