Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has backed calls for the creation of a new voters' register ahead of the 2016 general elections.

According to her, a new register will erase all doubts and engender confidence in the electoral commission going into next year's polls.

The main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) was the first to make the call insisting that the current register is flawed and cannot be used for the general polls. They claim the register contains names of nationals of some other African countries, especially Togo. The party has petitioned the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and other African leaders on the matter.

The EC has, however, asked the various political parties to submit their views on the matter for a decision to be made.

Commenting on the development, the founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP) told the media in Accra Thursday that the EC must just heed the call by the NPP and develop a new register.

'I think the issue of the voters' register should be revisited. We must clean the register to enable people have confidence in it. We don't want any pink sheet issue again. I believe a new Voters' register will help bring a conclusion to all these controversies,' she stated.
