None of the over 50 universities or higher institutions in the country made it to the Top 10 in the latest ranking of universities in Africa.

With the Top 200 institutions in Africa, the University of Ghana placed 14 followed by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Technology and University of Cape Coast at the 29th and 56th positions respectively.

The University of Education Winneba was ranked 120th whilst the University for Development Studies trailed in the 160th position.

The ranking is based on research publications and citations from 2010-2014 as well as visibility on the internet.

Director of the Institute for Continuous Education and Interdisciplinary Research (ICEIR), Prof. Seidu-Alhassan has therefore expressed worry over the poor performance put up by the country’s universities.

He was speaking at the Annual Interdisciplinary Conference of the University for Development Studies.

Prof. Seidu said the situation reflects the country’s higher institutions’ research capabilities and influence on development policy.

He blamed the poor performance on two things: low level of efforts to publish quality papers and low visibility of published research works due to poor market strategy.

Vice chancellor of the University for Development Studies, Prof Haruna Yakubu feared the proposed research fund by government to boost research may be starved of money.

He is therefore urging the government to lobby private industries to contribute to the research fund. Those who respond positively could be given tax rebate, he suggested.
