Mob ruptures alleged robber's calf muscles

Cape Coast, Sept. 1, GNA - A 24-year-old alleged robber, is struggling to walk or stand upright without support, after the tendon connecting his right calf muscles to his heel bone was cut by an irate mob at Kakumdo, a suburb of the Cape Coast Metropolis.

Alex Adongo alias Dada 'C', a mason and resident of Ankaful, would have been lynched but for the timely intervention of the Police from the Central Regional Headquarters, who rescued and sent him to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where he was hospitalized for five days.

The incident occurred on Sunday, August 23 when he was caught stealing in the area.

Barefooted with the wounded leg bandaged and wearing a long sleeved shirt over a pair of black boxer short, Adongo, was on Monday arraigned before a Cape Coast Circuit Court, but for a different robbery, he allegedly committed prior to the mob action.

He allegedly, armed himself with a machete, robbed a female resident of Essuekyir, another suburb of Cape Coast of her handbag containing an HP Laptop, valued at Ghȼ1, 850.00, two mobile phones worth Ghȼ350.00, cash of Ghȼ500.00, all totaling GHȼ2,700.00 and various identity cards.

Charged with robbery, his plea was not taken and the court presided over by Mr. Kofi Seshie Ametewee, remanded him into police custody to re-appear on Monday, September 14.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Charles Yao Anku told the court that on Monday July 7 this year, the complainant and victim, Ms. Agnes Owusu Ansah, a resident of Essuekyir Community two, set off to work around 0630hrs.

He said upon reaching a section of a narrow path leading out of her house, Adongo, who was hiding in a cassava farm nearby and armed with a machete, emerged suddenly and demanded Ms. Ansah's bag which contained the aforementioned items.

He said Adongo threatened to cause harm to Ms. Ansah with the machete, if she refused to hand over her bag after which he pushed her to the ground making her sustain injuries while he managed to abscond with the bag.

Ms. Ansah raised the alarm, and a passerby who went to her aid assisted her to report the case to the Police and she was issued police medical forms to attend hospital.

Chief Inspector Anku said on Sunday August 23, Adongo was involved in another robbery but luck eluded him this time around and he was apprehended by a mob, which beat him mercilessly.

During the mob action, someone called the police who proceeded to the scene, rescued and took him to the Cape Coast Teaching where he was admitted.

While on admission, Ms. Ansah, upon hearing of the incident, visited and identified him as the one who robbed her and she prompted the police leading to his re-arrest on Thursday 27 after he was discharged from the hospital.

He, however denied the offence in his police caution statement.
