The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) has honoured its former Women Commissioner Miss Nancy Dery, for a role in woman empowerment and leadership in Ghana.

Miss Nancy Dery, now with the Ghana Education Service in Wa was the National Women Commissioner for the Ghana National union of polytechnic students in 2010 to 2011 and as part of her many initiatives and passion for women empowerment and growth initiated the Annual Women Conference of the Union to address women leadership and rights.

The former Women Commissioner of GNUPS received a citation of honour at the 23rd Annual Delegates of the Ghana National Union Polytechnic Students (GNUPS), hosted y Takoradi Polytechnic from 26th to 30th August 2015.

The citation described Miss Nancy as the voice of women, campaigner of violence against women and a role model for young women in Ghana and Africa.

The citation read:

Your campaign reflects the increasing recognition of violence against women across the country and efforts to get women into leadership and decision-making roles.

You instituted the Women’s Conference.

As a Women activist; an eloquent orator, your declaration of Sentiments has been a revolutionary call for women's rights across a variety of spectrums and has long been a thorn in the side of misogynist

You have become a high-profile figure in GNUPS in the uprising against violence against women and campaigner for women's rights for many years. Your experience segued into a role mobilizing women and offering them a platform and voice.

Your long history of activism and focus on womanly advancement in Ghana has swung you to the recognition by the Women's Commission of the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students.

In appreciation for your faithful and loyal service to womanhood, we are happy to present this token of our affection and esteem gratitude on this occasion of our 23rd Annual Delegates Congress.

Now, therefore, be it resolved that, on behalf of the women constituents of the Ten Polytechnics of Ghana, I take great pride and recognition and saluting you. Indeed, the dedication and commitment to end gender inequalities and promote feminism are deserving of respect, admiration, and commendation of the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students.

In an interviewed with the Press, Miss Nancy thanked GNUPS for the honour, and added that, the recognition of GNUPS will further enhance her activism for women rights and empowerment.

She said, women are still marginalize despites many interventions by governments, civil society and development partners and reiterated that women themselves must lead the way to their economic freedom and empowerment.

The former Women Commissioner of GNUPS therefore called for more tactical collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to empower women. “Women empowerment is the only solution to poverty alleviation”. She said
