The Minister of Interior and MP for Navrongo Central, Mark Owen Woyongo, is reported to have knocked down a motorcyclist in Navrongo in the Upper East Region.

The Minister, who was at the steering wheel at the time of the accident, is in his constituency to pick up nomination forms for the November 7 parliamentary primaries of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

An eyewitness told DAILY GUIDE that the minister was speeding towards his hometown, Nayagenia, when his V8 Toyota Land Cruiser hit the woman, only identified as Grace, who is said to be from the Navrongo chief's palace.

When DAILY GUIDE got wind of the accident, a follow up was made to the police station but the minister's car wasn't spotted at the station. Subsequent attempts to visit the Upper East Regional Minister's residence, following reports that the car had been seen there, proved futile as security personnel at the entrance of the residence would not allow anyone to enter the place without permission or clearance from the Regional Minister.

Confirming the incident to Joy News later, Mark Woyongo said the female rider was safe even though she suffered a hip dislocation. According to the minister, he indicated through his traffic indicator that he wanted to overtake the female cyclist but suddenly she veered into his lane, compelling him to hit her.

As of 4pm Sunday, the minister said he was going to the Navrongo Police Station to write his statement and that his vehicle had been detained by the police.

He also added that the lady had been sent to Bawku to be attended to by bone specialists there.

Apart from picking up his nomination forms, the Interior Minister is said to have held meetings with NDC delegates in the constituency. He was reportedly on his way to meet some NDC delegates at First and Last Centre in his village when the accident occurred.

All has not been well in the camp of the Interior Minister in the constituency as some NDC members are said to be working against his bid to grab another opportunity to represent the party in 2016 in Navrongo Central.
