An Open Letter To The National Communications Authority

An Open Letter To The National Communications Authority
30.08.2015 LISTEN

It is with a painful heart that I write to you from my corner to register my displeasure on an issue I deem illegal and exploitation perpetuated by the stakeholders of the 1735 short code which I have been a victim.

Downloading Operamini browser using mtn internet connection comes with preloaded speedials which includes a soccer news page. But these preloaded speed dials later turned out to be pseudo credit sucking vampires aimed at exploiting unsuspecting subscribers.

A mere click on those speed dials automatically subscribes you to daily updates with a charge of Gh¢0.1 and interestingly GH¢0.5 for texting SPT to the shortcode 1735 if you want to unsubscribe to a service they imposed on you.

Surprisingly, you are not pre informed of the the terms and conditions of activation and deactivation but the service is imposed on you immediately you open the speed dial. This is a clear breach of the the national communications Authority's guidelines and an illegality for that matter. The MTN customer support claims they know nothing about the said activities but took my phone number and and the short code to deactivate it.

I want the NCA to take action on this illegality or we will seek advice.
