Deputy Eastern Regional Minister to contest Abirem Constituency seat

Koforidua, Aug 28, GNA - Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister has indicated that she would contest for the upcoming primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to represent the Abirem Constituency in 2016.

Subsequently, she is billed to pick her nomination forms by the close of next week and has called on all women to rally behind her to win the seat, to champion the welfare of women and girls project, which she has started already.

Ms Frimpong was the candidate for the same constituency in 2012. She battled it out with Madam Esther Dapaah, the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for the area, but lost to her.

In 2012, the Abirem Constituency was termed the 'battle of women' as Mavis Frimpong, the then District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, battled it out with Esther Dapaah, who was contesting to go to parliament the third time, a feat that earned the MP the nickname 'Ghana Mugabe' in parliament.

In 2016, Ms Frimpong, if able to sail through the primaries, would, however, battle it out with a male candidate, who defeated the incumbent NPP MP for the area, Madam Esther Dapaah, at the primaries.

Ms Frimpong in an interview with GNA said she had an unfinished business hence her decision to come back for the second time to capture the seat from the NPP.

She therefore called on all women irrespective of their backgrounds to give her the maximum support to ensure she wins in 2016.

She stated she had initiated several projects and programmes towards the empowerment of girls and women and so needed the platform of a parliamentarian to be able to reach out to all people in the area.
