The Convention Peoples Party has incurred the wrath of its breakaway Progressive Peoples Party after claims that the PPP had reached out to its mother party seeking re-unification ahead of the 2016 general elections.

Leader and founder of the PPP, Papa Kwesi Nduom broke away from Ghana’s founding party after disagreement with the top hierarchy of the CPP.

With just 16 months to next year’s election, top party officials of the CPP went public claiming they received proposals from the PPP asking to be allowed to rejoin the party.

The national chairperson of the CPP, Samia Nkrumah in an extensive interview with head of Joy News’ Political Desk, Evans Mensah, said some members of the PPP had made overtures to the CPP.

She said the CPP was open to any ideas of unity because teaming up was the only way to stand a real chance of winning power.

The National Secretary of the PPP, Kofi Asamoah Siaw, however, scoffed at the suggestions.

He said the PPP has provided credible leadership and become such a credible force that it does not need to initiate any unity talks with the CPP.

“I suspect the CPP wants to take credibility advantage of the fact that PPP has become a third force,” he said.

Mr. Asamoah Siaw said the CPP was “struggling with credibility and have image crisis” and is trying to take advantage of the credibility of the PPP.

He said whilst the founder of the PPP was the presidential candidate o the CPP in the 2008 elections, the PPP is not an Nkrumaist party and should be drawn into any talks of unity between Nkrumaist parties.

“We in the PPP will be the last to diminish the achievements of Kwame Nkrumah but PPP is not an Nkrumaist party,” he emphasised.

The 2012 presidential candidate of the CPP, Dr. Abu Sakara Foster, whilst unity between various Nkrumaist forces was important, the CPP must first put its house in order.

“It is important for the CPP to put its house in order by organising elections to select national officers whose tenure of office elapsed in June this year,” he stated.

He said many in both the PPP and CPP want reunification and “when our new set of executive is elected such an event can come about.”

The agriculturalist said many Ghanaians were despondent and are crying for a third political force to break stranglehold of the NPP and NDC on the governance of the nation.

“We need to take a step back and discuss the issue in a manner in which neither the CPP nor the PPP is trying to score political point,” he responded to the Mr. Siaw.

Dr Abu Sakara said the need to join forces and rescue the nation should override any sectional interest.
