Asante Kotoko Association Of Washington DC Celebrates Its 33rd Anniversary

On Saturday August 15, the Asante Kotoko Association of Washington Dc Metro Area celebrated their 33^rd Anniversary with a Grand Dinner Dance and fundraiser at the Dunya banquet hall in Alexandria.

The Asante Kotoko Association which happens to be one of the first Ghanaians Associations in the Washington Area has held this annual event since inception to support laudable projects and institutions in Ghana.

The Asante Kotoko Association of Washington DC has over the years donated equipments and provided financial support to various institutions which include Ward C2 of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and contributed to the Otumfuo Education fund.

The purpose of this year’s event was to raise funds to provide medical equipments and supplies for District hospitals in the Ashanti Region.

Addressing the gathering Mr. Henry Adu the President of the Association mentioned that since its inception the association has adopted the medical needs of the people of Ghana as a top priority project.

He was of the view that Ghanaians by tradition have always depended on government to provide them with health care “However the Government alone cannot provide meaningful health care to our brothers and sisters” Supporting his statement he said “For example 3 years ago only 9.7% of Government expenditures were on healthcare and the World health Organization reported in 2012 that Ghana Government spent only 5.2% of its GDP on healthcare.” He therefore made a passionate appeal for support for this project.

Mr. George Bright-Abu, the publisher and Editor of the African Post Newspaper who chaired the function reiterated most of the issues raised by the president and appealed to the members to open the association to embrace the youth who will take over the mantle in the years to come. The Chairman emphasized that the fundraising event falls in line with their aim of “assisting in the socioeconomic development, educational, health, literary and scientific needs of the Ashanti region of Ghana in particular, and Ghana as a whole. ”

Various corporate institutions including South African Airways, Western Union and Group Nduom who sponsored the event took turns to address the gathering and promote their services.

The climax of the event was the Hawknad Industries sponsored Kaba Show. About ten ladies competed by showcasing their beautifully designed traditional “kaba” clothing after which three made it to the finals and were selected for prizes.
