Akim Oda (E/R), Aug. 3, GNA - Madam Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, has sworn in two sub-committee members to man the activities of small-scale mining.
The committees, which consists of five members each are from the Birim South District and the Birim Central Municipality.
The members of the committees are chiefs, elders, chief executives, the staff of Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Madam Serwaa Asamoah, in an interview with Ghana News Agency, said the committees are responsible for educating the miners on the need for environmental protection and the effect of their activities on the society.
She urged the committee members to consider initiating some social responsibility activities like the provision of school structures, clinics and markets.
She said the Ministry would reassess the management of the committee every three years, and appealed to every Ghanaian to support the Ministry in its effort to curb illegal mining in the society.
