Who Should I Marry?

Feature Article Who Should I Marry?
AUG 2, 2015 LISTEN

In our generation so many young adults are eager to marry but unable to find the right match. They move from one relationship to another in search for Mr Right or Mrs Right. Some married couples are not happy in their marriage because think they did not marry their soul mate. Is a good man or woman hard to find? I believe it won’t be hard if you leave it in the hands of God. Only death can separate married couples since God hates divorce (Malachi 2:6; Mark 10:7-9; Romans 7:1-3; 1 Corinthians 7:39) so don’t choose a partner for yourself before you regret it one day. Your marital affair can affect your purpose on this earth since your partner can have a hand in your rise or fall.

Marriage is the oldest institution, dating back to the Garden of Eden. From Genesis 2:20-25 ‘And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. {gave: Heb. called} And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. {made: Heb. builded} And Adam said, this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. {Woman: Heb. Isha} {Man: Heb. Ish} Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed [KJV] Marriage is theistic, thus marriage was never created by man but one that God ordained and created. Therefore God can never be left out when you want to marry. God created for Adam suitable companion for Him. God made a helper, Eve and not a set of women for Adam to choose from. There is the need to find out your suitable partner from the one who made marriage.

The Promised son through Abraham and Sarah is a great example God’s covenant through marriage. From Genesis 17:18-21 ‘And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! And God said Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant and with his seed after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year [KJV]. God’s covenant has a specific path that it traces to. Isaac, the promise son was foretold to come through Abraham and Sarah and not through Abraham and another woman.

The birth of Jesus has something to tell us about predestined couples. From Matthew 1:18-23 KJV ‘now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. {Conceived: Gr. begotten} And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. {JESUS: that is, Saviour, Heb} Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. {They...: or, his name shall be called} [KJV]. The Messianic prophecy fulfilled through Joseph and Mary clearly point out that our descendants is dependent on our marital affairs. Would the prophecy have been fulfilled if Joseph had divorced Mary? Certainly not. The prophecy was dependent on both Mary, the virgin (Isaiah 7:14) and Joseph, the seed of David (Isaiah 9:7).

As a gentleman you must not propose to a lady because of her physical beauty or because she possesses qualities you want in a woman. Likewise ladies must not accept proposals because of the man’s wealth or qualities of you want in a man. Before you propose or accept a proposal you must acknowledge God, seek His guidance, trust and wait on Him to direct your paths (Proverb 3:5-6; Psalm 37:5; Jeremiah 33:7; Psalm 37:34).King David always inquired of the Lord before he took a decision (1 Samuel 23:1-5;1Samuel 23:10-14;1 Samuel 30:8-9;2 Samuel 2:1-2;2 Samuel 5:17-25;2 Samuel 21:1). David was totally committed and feared God. He recognized God as the master builder (Psalm 127:1). No wonder He was described as a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22).

If God knew you before you were formed in your mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5) then surely He knows your life partner as well. The God who knows your hair by their number (Luke 12:7), He who counts the number of the stars and calls them all by name (Psalm 147:4) choose your perfect rib before the creation of the world. In Hosea 4:2, the bible clearly state that my people perish because of lack of knowledge. You won’t know if you don’t ask (James 4:2). The loving God will give to you what you ask from Him (Luke 11:9-13). How Isaac got married to Rebecca a practical example of why we should ask God. When Abraham sent his servant to choose a wife for Isaac, his servant trusted the Lord, prayed and God answered him (Genesis 24). Let God lead you in the choice of a suitable partner so you can have a happy and successful marriage.
