Avoid 'chew-pour-pass-forget' mindset, Regent University President urge students

Founder and President of Regent University College of Science and Technology , Reverend Prof. Emmanuel Larbi has called for a national policy to end the culture of ‘chew-pour-pass-and-forget’ mindset among students in the country.

This according to him the policy would be the only way to strengthen Ghana’s education system and enable it produce problem-solving graduates.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Prof Larbi said until students are able to apply what they have learnt in school, the culture of chew-pour-pass-and-forget will persist.

“Generally, our education in Ghana has been base on learning by memorizing certain facts and produce it in exams to get grade “A”, you are considered as brilliant students but if that person cannot able to use that knowledge to the job market it doesn’t make sense.

“We have developed that kind of chew-pour-pass-and-forget culture and it has become part of our educational systems we need a national policy to force schools and students to apply what they learn in school on the job market after completing tertiary education”, he said.

He called on government to support technical and vocational institutions across the country.

Contributing to the discussion, a former Minister of Education in the erstwhile Kuffour-led NPP Administration , Prof. Dominic Fobih admonished students to opt for technical and vocational education because not everyone might have the opportunity to go to the university.

He said although courses like banking, marketing, finance and its related courses are important, vocational and technical training cannot be underrated.

Prof. Fobih has therefore urged students to learn hard and think of how to apply the knowledge they acquired in schools to impact on society.
