Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur has opened a three-day Africa Mobile and ICT Expo in Accra with a call on the country to focus on the development of software applications.

According to him, the country cannot compete with the global giants when it comes to the development of hardware application.

The Vice President said, 'The nation's focus should be on the development of software applications that make life easier.

He entreated Ghanaians to see the mobile device as a positive tool for national peace and development, stating 'the mobile phone would become a useful device when it is put to good use but when it assumes the character of users who have the penchant to destroy others, it becomes a dangerous device'.

Ghana has become a continental leader in mobile phone penetration, with figures from the National Communications Authority (NCA) putting the penetration at 31 million as of March this year, while that of internet is 60 percent, he indicated.

He said that the figures were encouraging and constitute a huge advantage for the nation.

Ato Sarpong, Deputy Minister of Communications, said ICT has offered opportunities to businesses to expand in the country.

'The pervasiveness of the mobile phone is a symbol of the dominant role technology has come to assume in our lives,' he said.

Mr Sarpong said Africa's broadband connection would reach 160 million by the end of 2016.

He stated that the government was committed to providing the necessary investments to ensure that the nation does not lag behind in terms of global ICT competition.

The three-day event was organized by Coasters Company Ltd in partnership with the Ministry of Communications with sponsorship from Huawei Technology, Subah Info solutions, Info Box, surfline, Diamond Capital, among others.

The event brought together ministers, apps /software developers, programmers, tech engineers , mobile technology lovers , students, device manufacturers, regulators , telcos and policy makers, investors, as well as Members of Parliament.
