JUL 30, 2015 LISTEN

Two Senior High Schools in the Northern Region have been closed down following rioting by students.

The students of T. I Ahmadiaya School in Salaga and Karaga SHS had resorted to vandalism following the insistence of school authorities to ensure strict compliance of school rules.

Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Mohammed-Muniru Limuna and Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh have confirmed the closure of the schools to Joy News.

At the T. I Ahmadiaya School, some students had gone to the examination hall with slippers which were seized yesterday.

Their colleague students subsequently vandalized police properties and burnt one of the school’s dormitories today

Also at the Karaga SHS, the students were infuriated when school authorities asked them not to use cell phones on campus, and decided to go on rampage.

Whilst District Security Councils are meeting to deliberate on the respective incidents, chiefs have also been called upon to intervene.

Alhaji Mohammed-Muniru Limuna told Joy News he will engage the regional peace council to start talking to the students “to let them know that they have to discipline themselves and not to take the law into their own hands”.

He said a stakeholder meeting involving the region director of education and heads of school would be convened to find out what are the triggers of the frequent riots in schools.

Meanwhile, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh said reinforcement has been deployed from Tamale and Bimbilla to restore calm in Salaga after residents there got involved in the rioting following the shooting and killing of a young man allegedly by the police .

A police vehicle was vandalized by the rampaging students, he said, while some residents hurled stones at the police.

No arrest has been made so far, he said.
