Government has transferred an amount of ¢542,895.12 being payment of salary arrears for 64 junior doctors.

The transfer note, a copy of which was sighted by Joy News came from the revolving fund account of the Controller and Accountant General's Department.

Junior doctors at the 37 Military Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Volta Regional Hospital are to benefit from the amount.

The 91 affected doctors who have been working for the past 11 months without salary left the consulting rooms and picketed at the Accountant General's Department.

They had been crying for months for the payment of their salaries but their protests did not yield any results.

Last week they threatened to, on Wednesday, withdraw their services completely if their salaries were not paid.

It appears their picketing yielded fruits. On the day of the deadline, Labour Minister Haruna Iddrisu who was in another crucial meeting with doctors and other health workers over conditions of service told the media government has paid some of the junior doctors.

He provided as evidence a Bank Transfer Advice issued yesterday with a total amount of over 542, 000 cedis.

The amount is expected to cover 64 out of the 91 doctors, Joy News has learnt.

It is not clear yet if the monies have hit the accounts of the disgruntled doctors and whether the amount covers the 11 months arrears.

It is also not clear when the remaining doctors will be paid.
