45 Households Benefit From RING

FORTY-FIVE households from two communities within the Tamale Metropolis of the Northern Region have benefitted from the Resiliency in Northern Ghana Project (RING) under the auspices of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The beneficiary households received a total of 224 sheep under the livestock sub component of RING to boost animal farming in the Northern Region to enable them to generate income in order to cater for their families.

The project which is a five-year integrated project and partnership effort under USAID's Feed the Future initiative is designed contribute to augment the government of Ghana’s efforts to reduce poverty and improve the nutritional status of vulnerable population.

The purpose of the RING project in the Northern Region is to improve the livelihoods and nutritional status of vulnerable households in targeted communities of 17 districts.

Junu and Baglahi communities last Saturday each received 30 sheep from the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly through the Metropolitan Agricultural Department.

Beneficiary households include women who have a proven record of animal rearing and were also trained on basic animal production, including housing, sanitation, breeding and feeding among others.

Tamale Metropolitan Director of Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Mr Charles Adams, disclosed that plans were afoot to rope in more communities to benefit from the project in subsequent years to help reduce poverty endemic in the north.

Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hanan Gundaadow Abdul Rahaman, who presented the animals to the two communities, made passionate appeal to them not to allow the livestock given them to roam in the streets of the metropolis as that remained a major cause of road accidents in the metropolis.
