The Brong Ahafo Regional Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Ghana,(TUC), has held its 11th quadrennial delegates conference in Sunyani on Friday, July 24, to elect new executives to steer the affairs of the union for the next 4 years and it was under the theme: "Quality Education A Critical Tool For Development in Brong Ahafo; The Role of Education Worker".

The Brong Ahafo Regional Industrial Relations Officer of Tewu, Abeaba Mathew Abereyiya, speaking at the conference said, the only way government can embrace quality education as a tool for development is to attend to the needs of educational workers.

He observed that "quality education is not only building more schools and not being able to keep the students in school; quality education is not only about putting up new infrastructures and not able to maintaining the existing structures, again, quality education is not only training more teachers and not able to give teachers and non-teaching staff the needed material to work with."

According to him, "cost of living is at its highest level but the salaries that they take as educational workers is nothing to ride home about."

He therefore appealed to government to help hire more non-teaching staff in the educational institutions as the few ones are over stretched.

Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. Justice Samuel Adjei assured that, "It is government's vision to enhance qualitative education at all levels in Ghana, especially in the Brong Ahafo Region."

"Education is aimed at preparing the people for pursuing their visions and ambitions, for the individual to be able to live a useful life in the society and contribute towards the social, economic and political development of the nation, the relevant skills, values, attitude, knowledge, and competences must lucrative."

Hon. Justice Adjei stressed that government will continue to make strenuous efforts by enhancing excellent teaching and learning at all levels of education in the country.

He added that the role of education workers is not only critical but absolutely necessary to the channeling out of qualified professionals to fit into the various sectors of our national economy.
