JUL 27, 2015 LISTEN

The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has held a round table discussion on ‘Ethnic Power Relations and Conflict: lessons from around the world’ in Accra. The discussions formed part of a research project in Ghana, focusing on the link between group-level political inequality, ethnic exclusion and conflict in fragile states. The research is also aimed at increasing knowledge transfer to policy-makers and other key stakeholders through evidence-based policy recommendations.

Attended by key stakeholders from the academia, policy community, and the media, the discussion provided the platform for the stakeholders to share their perspectives on the research theme. Chaired by Research Fellow of CDD-Ghana, Ambassador Francis Tsegah, and led by Dr. Manuel Vogts of ETH Zurich, International Conflict Research based in Switzerland, the round table discussion was part of activities marking a five-day working visit to the country by Dr. Vogts.

In his presentation, Dr. Vogts noted that ethnic exclusion, which is the main source of conflicts in many countries, has been declining considerably in Africa, particularly in West Africa for the past two decades. He attributed this development to the practice of democracy and power sharing, which foster inclusion, in many of these countries.

The research project, Ethnic Power Relations and Conflict in fragile States, is being conducted a group of researchers in Ghana, Egypt, Guatemala, India and Zambia to understand the dynamics of political inclusion and exclusion and seeks to improve governance by reducing exclusion and discrimination of ethnic groups. The findings from the research project will be used to inform policies that will enhance positive outcomes and advocacy measures to contain and redress any future dangers.

The research project is coordinated at the international level by researchers in ETH Zurich and University of Geneva, both based in Switzerland, and is being funded from the Swiss Program for Research on Global Issues for Development (R4D), a joint initiative of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Swiss National Science Foundation.
