NPP NPP set for primaries in 7 constituencies
JUL 25, 2015 LISTEN

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will hold primaries in seven constituencies Saturday to elect Parliamentary candidates for the 2016 multi-party elections.

The seven constituencies are Tema West, Korle Klottey and Tema Central in the Greater Accra Region; Obom-Domeabra in the Central Region; Kintampo North in the Brong Ahafo Region; Juaben in the Ashanti Region and a run off in Gomoa East in the Central Region.

A request for an injunction was filed to halt the process in the Korle Klottey constituency by some aggrieved party supporters, however, party executives have indicated that they have been cleared by the party headquarters to conduct the primaries.

NPP Vice Chairman Alhaji Aliyu Kabe told Joy News they are yet to be served with any injunction letter from the court.

The Korle Klottey constituency has been embroiled in controversy over Nii Noi Nortey’s parliamentary aspirations for the area.

Some party supporters claim Nii Noi Nortey is under police investigation for submitting, as part of his forms for adoption as NPP parliamentary candidate, a forged certificate indicating he holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

But Alhaji Aliyu Kabe told Joy News “we are going ahead per the directives of the National General Secretary by a letter dated 15th of July; we are going ahead...to have that election. Since we have not been served [an injunction letter] the matter of contempt does not arise”.

He said he does not expect any violence in the constituency from the party supporters who have filed the injunction against Mr Nortey.

“We think everybody will come there peacefully, willingly and vote for his or her candidate and then wait for the results”, he said.

There are claims that Lawyer Philip Addison one of the contestants in the Korle Klottey elections is scheming to have Nii Noi Nortey disqualified so he would have an easy road to Parliament, a claim Addison has dismissed.

Meanwhile, Kwesimintsim and Okai Kwei South constituencies were also scheduled to hold the primaries today but they been excluded because of legal issues.
