A list supposedly naming the 80 richest people in Ghana is out, sending shockwaves and igniting a fresh debate about the net worth of some popular Ghanaians.

Interestingly, the list, which puts the name of business magnate and owner of Peace FM, Osei Kwame (Despite), at number 67 on the ranking, does not include the name of Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan who earns a whopping $360, 000 a week, excluding accompanying bonuses.

Making it to the list compiled by Goodman AMC, which has been dubbed 'The Ghana Wealth Report', are businessmen Charles Ampofo, Ernesto Tarricone, Sam Jonah, Nabil Edmond Mourkazel and Ibrahim Mahama.

Charles Ampofo, who happens to be the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kampac International PLC, an oil and gas company, is first on the list and touted by the report to be having a net worth of some $1.46 billion, followed by Tarricone, who is into real estates and of Trasaaco fame, with an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion.

Third on the list is businessman and former CEO of Anglogold Ghana, Dr Sam Jonah, who is estimated to have a net worth of $1.2 billion.

Executive Chairman of commodities company, Finatrade Holdings, Nabil Edmond Mourkazel is fourth on the list with an estimated net worth of $900 million, while younger brother of President Mahama, Ibrahim Mahama of Engineers and Planners, who is into mining, is fifth on the list with an estimated net worth of $860 million.

Ghana's 80 Richest People control $2.5 billion, which represents 6.4% of Ghana's GDP, with a combined wealth of $29.3 billion in total, employing over 150,000 Ghanaians directly.

In all, the report discovered three billionaires and 77 multimillionaires who form part of a group of individuals labelled as the Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individuals (UHNWI).

On the 80 Richest People in Ghana list are five women, making Patricia Poku-Diaby, who is into cocoa and cotton export, the richest woman in Ghana, with a net worth of $720 million, followed by Theresa Oppong-Beeko of Manet Estates, Kate Quartey-Papafio of Reroy Cables, Gifty Lamptey, wife of the late businessman David Lamptey and Grace Amey-Obeng of FC Beauty and Cosmetics fame in that order.

Together, the five richest women in Ghana are said to be controlling some $1.62 billion, with the youngest multimillionaire currently in Ghana thought to be 39-year-old boss of the BEIGE Group, Mike Nyinaku, with a net worth of $125 million.

The report, however, does not cover politicians who acquired their wealth by virtue of being in active politics, and monarchs who acquired their wealth through their royal status.

Methodology
Goodman AMC said it has managed to keep track of the activities of the wealthiest people in Ghana for the past two years, taking into consideration their assets, business deals they negotiate, mergers and acquisitions (M &A).

It claims to have placed the Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individuals (UHNWI) cap for this report at $100 million, meaning only the rich with a net worth above $100 million dollars were considered for this study. The richest families in Ghana with a properly laid down succession structure were also considered for this study.

The 80 Richest People in Ghana forms part of Goodman AMC's annual Ghana Wealth Report which ranks the richest entrepreneurs and investors in Ghana. In Goodman AMC's endeavour to calculate the net worth of wealthy Ghanaians, the report said they strive to deliver the most pellucid calculations available. Each billionaire or millionaire's profile contains a circumstantial breakdown of how that person's fortune is tallied.

The Goodman AMC's Ghana Wealth Report is a dynamic study on the measure of Ghana's wealthy based on their business interests in Ghana and around the world. All valuations are converted into US dollars at current exchange rates.

Calculation
Goodman AMC calculated the net worth by using some degree of estimation to value each person's assets and properties as well as stakes in public and private firms, and performance on the Ghana Stock Exchange. For most Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individuals (UHNWI) in the financial sector, researchers had access to their annual reports which made mention of their company's earnings or turnovers as well as their assets and liabilities, information on the profile and turnovers of some UHNWI and their companies.
