Press Statement Statement By The Build Ghana Movement On Talensi Elections
JUL 14, 2015 LISTEN

The members of the mass movement, Build Ghana Movement (BGM) wish to commend the people of Talensi on the completion of Parliamentary by-election, which was free, fair and transparent. We further commend the National Electoral Commission's successful organization of the electoral process, in accordance with the country’s constitution.

We are excited to note that, the conduct of the Talensi elections by the Electoral Commission compared to previous elections in the country has been outstanding as the two major political parties have accepted the results without the usual post-election criticisms of the EC.

We also wish to commend His Excellency President John Mahama on the appointment of a substantive head of the National Electoral Commission, Mrs. Charlotte Osei. It takes a leader of extraordinary courage to be decisive in making the outright choice instead of appointing a new Chairman in an acting capacity a situation which prevails in other democracies.

We salute the President for making a bold decision in the interest of the country to appoint a substantive Chair of the commission thus giving the new appointee the latitude to professionally execute her mandates in a free and fair manner devoid of political interference.

The appointment of Mrs Charlotte Osei as the first woman Head of the Electoral Commission, a very sensitive state institution further confirms the President’s commitment toward women empowerment and a further boost to the legacy of the late President, John Attah Mills in given women and youth opportunities to serve in leadership.

The members of the Build Ghana Movement reiterate our appreciation for the work of the new Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, and the entire team of the Electoral commission on the conduct of the Talensi by-elections.

While we do appreciate the effort of the security agencies to provide security and to help create a free, fair and peaceful environment for the electoral process, the members of the Build Ghana Movement are also concerned by the violent events of Tuesday, July 7 between groups loyal to the two major political parties.

We commend the Ghana Police Service for setting up a Special Investigation Task Force to investigate the violent events of Talensi and to determine the facts and circumstances through independent and impartial proceedings, in order to hold accountable those responsible. This will serve as a deterrent to other trouble-makers as the country prepares for the 2016 general elections.

We also wish to encourage all political parties and their supporters to remain committed to the legitimate political process, to exercise maximum restraint and to work together to promote enduring peace and stability.

Signed:
Jacob Tetteh
