08.07.2015 LISTEN

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has recaptured the Talensi seat beating the opposition NPP and seven other parties that took part in Tuesday's by-election, provisional results have revealed.

The party’s candidate, former head of the Ghana Prisons Service, BT Baba is the MP-elect.

Per results received by Starrfmonline.com Baba is leading by a margin of 4000 votes leaving the main opposition to battle with the PNC to close the gap.

Provisional results show that Baba has so far obtained 10,188 representing 43.61% of total votes cast as against Thomas Duanab's (NPP) 6492 representing 27.79% of the total votes.

This means the ruling party has added additional muscle to its overwhelming parliamentary supremacy. The seat was until 2012 occupied by the NDC.

Both parties had said the election provides them the opportunity to test their strength and strategies ahead of the 2016 elections.

Already the NPP's Gabby Otchere Darko has taken to Twitter to congratulate the NDC candidate:

Today’s election was riddled with pockets of violence as the main opposition NPP and the ruling NDC have been at each other’s throat throughout the voting period.

Tension went high in the late hours of Tuesday afternoon following a clash between the NDC’s Azoka Boys and the opposition NPP’s Bolga Bull Dogs.

The clashes reportedly resulted in the injury of some individuals from both sides of the political divide.

The poll became necessary following the enskinment of the MP for the area Robert Nachinab Mosore as chief of the Tolon traditional area.
