02.07.2015 LISTEN
By Coalition of Domestic Election Observers

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) welcomes the appointment of a new chairman for the Electoral Commission. The Coalition as well congratulates Mrs. Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei on her appointment to head Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC).

CODEO notes with appreciation the welcoming reception that the general public and the political parties have received the new appointment. The Coalition reminds the new Chairman to consider these goodwill gestures from the public as a call to duty and wishes that she approaches her work with utmost professionalism, team work and neutrality at all times. The Coalition further urges the new Chairman to do all she can to help enhance public trust and confidence in the Commission. CODEO hopes that Mrs. Osei continues from where Dr. Afari-Gyan left off and pursue the needed administrative and electoral reforms. It also hopes that Mrs. Osei works hard to strengthen internal structures of the Commission to make it more effective.

On its part, CODEO will continue to offer its fullest support and cooperation to Mrs. Osei and the Commission to improve on the integrity and credibility of Ghana elections as it had done during the tenure of Kwadwo Afari-Gyan.

The coalition is privileged to have worked closely with Dr. Afari-Gyan since its formation in 2000. While welcoming and congratulating Mrs. Osei as the new EC Chairman, CODEO takes this opportunity to acknowledge and commend the former EC Chairman, Dr. Afari-Gyan, for his immense contributions to the management of elections in Ghana in particular, and Africa in general.

Finally, the coalition congratulates Mrs. Osei on her appointment and urges the existing Commissioners, the entire staff of the EC, political parties, media and major election stakeholders, both state and non-state actors, to work with the new chairman and play their respective roles in ensuring that Ghana’s electoral process is enhanced in future elections.
