Ghana has conferred its highest national honors on the immediate past Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan. The “Companion of the Order of Star of Ghana” award was presented by President John Mahama on Wednesday for Dr Afari Gyan’s service to the nation.

The former Chair of the EC is a Ghanaian academic, political scientist and election administrator. He retired from serving as the EC Chair last month after supervising all the nation’s elections since its return to multi party democracy in 1992.

Dr Afari Gyan has also been credited with overseeing the elections of some other African countries with several publications on election matters to his credit. A blight on his 23 years of service to his motherland was an indictment by the largest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party in an electoral petition which the party filed after the 2012 general elections.

The event which took place at the Banquet Hall of the State House saw several dignitaries in attendance including members of the Diplomatic Corps, Ministers of State including Alex Segbefia, Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, Dzifa Attivor among several others.

The President also honored 42 medical personnel who travelled to Ebola stricken countries with various National Awards. The health service personnel at the peril of their lives, volunteered to offer medical assistance to the worst hit countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea at the height of the virus which claimed over 11,000 lives majority of them in these three countries. President Mahama was full of praise for their selfless service to mankind.

Meanwhile Mrs. Charlotte Osei, the new EC Chairperson will officially assume duty in her new portfolio on Monday. She was until this appointment the Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education.

Mrs. Osei, a lawyer with considerable experience in public service management, institutional reform also has expertise in corporate law, banking, insurance, project financing and public-private partnerships.
