Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has urged Ghana's newly appointed Electoral Commissioner to consult the head of INEC in Nigeria to ensure free and fair elections in the 2016.

According to her, election observers of the recent elections in Nigeria expressed satisfaction with the commitment and professionalism of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) headed by Attahiru Muhammadu Jega.

Mrs Owusu Ekuful believes that the new EC boss can learn some lessons from INEC to safeguard Ghana’s peace.

President John Mahama in accordance with Article 70 (2) of the constitution appointed Charlotte Osei Thursday as new chair of the Electoral Commission, taking over from Dr. Afari Gyan who went on retirement after supervising six elections.

Charlotte Osei, until her appointment was head of the National Commission of Civic Education (NCCE).

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful told Adom News says if Mrs Osei consults Nigeria’s INEC it will help her to organize proper elections that will not incite violence.

“Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega is now noted for his good work in organizing elections violence free and credible elections that saw All Progressives Congress (APC) party’s leader Muhammadu Buhari as the President of Nigeria so I think it will be prudent for her to take key note from it” Ablekuma West legislator emphasized.

She emphasized that the upcoming general elections in 2016 is a critical one and hence must not be conducted anyhow.

“People are wild and no one will go to court again as our party did after the 2012 general elections because the EC told us that elections are won at the polling stations not at court” Ursula said.

She also urged Charlotte Osei to learn only the positives from the immediate past EC chairman head, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan.

“Dr. Afari Gyan is good in conducting elections but I’m not happy about what transpired in the 2012 elections so she [Charlotte Osei] must still contact INEC chair to learn how to conduct proper elections as expect by Ghanaians” Ursula Owusu Ekuful stressed.
