The police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra have arrested a cleaner allegedly parading as a medical doctor and conducting abortions at Pokuase Mayera near Accra.

The suspect, Gladys Quartey, aged 49, was first arrested by the Pokuase police and later handed over to the CID at the headquarters following a report by a young woman that Gladys had been carrying out illegal abortions on unsuspecting women for a paltry fee of GH¢150.

Her activities were uncovered when one of the victims reported her to the Pokuase police, leading to her arrest on June 25, 2015 at about 3pm.

She has since been granted bail by the police while investigations continue.

ASP Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Public Relations Officer of the CID, who confirmed the arrest to DAILY GUIDE, said preliminary investigations indicated that Madam Gladys Quartey, who worked as a cleaner with the Ga West Municipal Assembly Council, had turned into an 'abortion contractor' terminating pregnancies of young girls at Pokuase Mayera and its environs.

He said the suspect, noted in the neighbouhood as an abortion specialist, claimed she learnt the trade from health workers she observed at the Amasaman Government Hospital.

'The police learnt that Gladys operates from a single room in an uncompleted building in the area where she injected the victims with a mixture of drugs at a fee of GH¢150 and this causes severe damage to their foetus resulting in bleeding,' ASP Tenge underscored.

She said a search conducted in her room after the arrest revealed syringes, a pair of scissors, a number of assorted drugs and others.

Following interrogation, Gladys claimed to be a family planning officer and produced a certificate to substantiate her claim, but a careful scrutiny of the certificate turned out that it was one for a two-day training workshop on family planning.
