MP Floored In NPP Elections
29.06.2015 LISTEN

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper Denkyira East constituency over the weekend dumped incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Ben Kofi Ayeh, as it elected Samuel Nsowah Djan as its parliamentary candidate to represent the party in the 2016 general elections.

Ayeh's counterpart in Tema East in the Greater Accra Region, Titus Glover, however, retained his seat just as Appiah Pinkrah from Adansi Akrofrom did.

Nsowah Djan polled 220 of the votes to beat the incumbent, who had 115 votes.

Mr Ayeh, who is in his third term as MP for the area, is the first incumbent MP to lose the NPP primaries in the Central Region and joins 23 others, including Dr Richard Anane, Isaac Osei, Kofi Frimpong and Gifty Klenam.

The primary at Upper Denkyira East was not held on June 13, 2015 as expected because Mr Ayeh was on parliamentary duties outside the country.

In his victory statement, Mr Nsowah Djan, a presiding member of the district assembly, thanked the delegates for voting for him and pledged to work hard for the party to retain the seat in the 2016 general elections.

He noted that the MP for the area was an experienced person and that he would consult him for advice to enable the party win over more voters.

Mr Ayeh promised to use his resources and energy to support the winner to help the party retain the seat and wrest power from the NDC in 2016.

The election was supervised by the municipal electoral officer of the Electoral Commission (EC), Daniel Dela Dzokoto.

The whole town was electrified when supporters of the party as well as community members trooped to the street amidst dancing to brass band music after the election of Nsowah Djan.

At Tema East, Daniel Nii Kwetei Titus Glover, who won the 2012 parliamentary poll with three votes against his opponent, earning him the sobriquet 'MP3', has pledged to increase the margin to 3,000 votes come the 2016 general elections, to ensure victory for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, standard bearer of the NPP.

He gave the promise at the weekend after he narrowly won the NPP parliamentary primary.

He led with 45 votes to beat his contender, Benjamin Armah Ashietey, a 29-year-old freight forwarder, who garnered 284 votes against the incumbent's 329 votes.

Titus Glover, in his victory message, admitted: 'The young man gave me a tough fight and it is good the party has people of this kind.'

He noted that Ghanaians are yearning for a change of political administration and want the NPP to return to power to improve their living conditions.

Benjamin promised his unflinching support for the elected parliamentary candidate to ensure victory for the party.
